Abstract The proposal aim is to detect and study hard emission from the supernova remnant IC 443. The remnant is the most spectacular case of an SNR interacting with a molecular cloud. IC 443 is an extended (45 arcmin) remnant containing a compact pulsar wind nebula and coincided with the CGRO EGRET source 3EG J01617+2238. We argue that spatially resolved observations of the remnant by INTEGRAL IBIS, SPI, and JEM-X would provide unique information on the structure of the remnant as well as on nonthermal processes of particle acceleration and their interactionswith molecular gas.Our major goals are:(i) Imaging and spectral study of hard X-ray continuum emission of the pulsar wind nebula in IC 443 recently resolved by Chandra and XMM-Newton at energies below 10 keV.(ii) Study of hard continuum emission spectrum above 10 keV to identify the nature of the CGRO EGRET source 3EG J01617+2238 and to constrain the models of particle acceleration (leptons vs nucleons) in the northeastern shell of IC 443 combining INTEGRAL data with all available data from CGRO COMPTEL and BeppoSAX.(iii) Searching for narrow 511 keV annihilation line emission to constrain the nucleosynthetic yields, the structure of the ejecta of the supernova, and conditions in the remnant.

Mission Description The INTEGRAL (International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory) mission, launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) on October 17, 2002, was designed to study high-energy phenomena in the universe. INTEGRAL was operating until february 2025 and it was equipped with three high-energy instruments: the Imager on Board the INTEGRAL Satellite (IBIS), the Spectrometer on INTEGRAL (SPI), and the JEM-X (Joint European Monitor for X-rays). Its Optical Monitoring Camera (OMC) provided optical V-band magnitude measurements, complementing the high-energy observations.
