Title INTEGRAL AND XMM-NEWTON OBSERVATIONS OF BLAZARS IN OUTBURST

Abstract We ask for 2 observations of 500 ks each to observe in target-of-opportunity (TOO) up to 2 blazars, conditional to stringent and well defined triggering criteria based on optical and/or X-ray brightening. Serendipitous detections of bright blazars by INTEGRAL itself and by Swift/BAT will also be instrumental to TOO activation. By coordinating these INTEGRAL observations with XMM-Newton campaigns we will guarantee the coverage of a crucial energy range for determining the overall spectral distribution of blazars in a flaring state, and thus for constraining any emission model, as proved by the success of a similar program conducted in past years with BeppoSAX.=======Please note that the exposures indicated in the Observation Details Panel are purely indicative, only to fill the form. The required time is 2 observation of 500 ks each in ToO.

Mission Description The INTEGRAL (International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory) mission, launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) on October 17, 2002, was designed to study high-energy phenomena in the universe. INTEGRAL was operating until february 2025 and it was equipped with three high-energy instruments: the Imager on Board the INTEGRAL Satellite (IBIS), the Spectrometer on INTEGRAL (SPI), and the JEM-X (Joint European Monitor for X-rays). Its Optical Monitoring Camera (OMC) provided optical V-band magnitude measurements, complementing the high-energy observations.
