Description | We propose to observe the polarization of the 621 GHzwater vapor maser in VY Canis Majoris to demonstrate the capability of HIFI to make polarization observations of Far-Infrared/Submillimeter spectral lines. The proposed Demonstration Phase would:- Show that HIFI is capable of interesting linear polarization measurements of spectral lines;- Test out the highest spectral resolving power to sortout closely spaced Doppler components;- Determine whether the relative intensities predictedby Neufeld and Melnick are correct;- Record the degree and direction of linear polarizationfor the closely-Doppler shifted peaks. |

Mission Description | Herschel was launched on 14 May 2009! It is the fourth cornerstone mission in the ESA science programme. With a 3.5 m Cassegrain telescope it is the largest space telescope ever launched. It is performing photometry and spectroscopy in approximately the 55-671 µm range, bridging the gap between earlier infrared space missions and groundbased facilities. |
