Description | We propose to establish the evolutionary state of Maddalena.sCloud. This region is regularly discussed as a prototype for a giantmolecular cloud (GMC) in an early phase of its life. This suggestionis based on the fact that this region of about 3x10^5 M_sun isentirely devoid of embedded massive stars. Thus, this regionpotentially presents an ideal site to study the initial conditions forthe evolution towards clouds like Orion A. This is not entirely clear, though: it has also been argued that this cloud might be at the end ofits life, and is now dispersing after being stirred up by previousstar formation. We therefore propose to execute two complementaryexperiments to establish the cloud.s evolutionary status. Both willuse wide-field parallel mode SPIRE/PACS dust emission maps. First, wewill obtain the first reliable estimates for the mass of the cloud andits clumps to revise the --- presently very uncertain --- virialanalysis on which suggestions for cloud dispersal are based. Second,we will search for deeply embedded young stellar objects (YSOs): ifthese very young (class 0-I) YSOs exist throughout the cloud, it wouldbe hard to argue that this is a cloud in which star formation isending. Depending on these experiments, our data will then be used toconstrain the physical conditions in the early life of massiveGMCs. Certainly, the properties of this cloud are unique: we onlyexpect to find about 6 such massive clouds without O stars within2.2kpc from sun. This is the only cloud of this sort we presentlyknow, and so our observations will have a significant legacy value forstudies of star formation. |

Mission Description | Herschel was launched on 14 May 2009! It is the fourth cornerstone mission in the ESA science programme. With a 3.5 m Cassegrain telescope it is the largest space telescope ever launched. It is performing photometry and spectroscopy in approximately the 55-671 µm range, bridging the gap between earlier infrared space missions and groundbased facilities. |
