| Description | The powerful radio galaxy Cygnus A affords the opportunity to study the activity of a hidden quasar at high spatial resolution. We have modelled the optical through radio SED of Cygnus A using data from a dedicated Spitzer spectroscopy program (Privon et al 2011). Our primary aim was to constrain the relative contribution of AGN and star formation heating to the total energy budget of the source. Our analysis also reveals that there must be a break in the synchrotron spectrum at FIR/sub-mm wavelengths. However, the paucity of data from 70-500 mu limits our ability to define the synchrotron component and the physical decomposition of the SED. We propose a 3hr program of observations with PACS and SPIRE to precisely define the far-infrared emission of Cygnus A between 50 and 700 microns. This will provide tight constraints on the far infrared emission and enable us to accurately model the contirbution of embedded star formation to the infrared luminosity. This in turn will provide an improved determination of the bolometric AGN luminosity, the geometric properties of the obscuring torus, and the behavior of the synchrotron spectrum at infrared wavelengths. We have in place a comprehensive suite of Bayesian SED modelling codes to analyse the data. |

| Mission Description | Herschel was launched on 14 May 2009! It is the fourth cornerstone mission in the ESA science programme. With a 3.5 m Cassegrain telescope it is the largest space telescope ever launched. It is performing photometry and spectroscopy in approximately the 55-671 µm range, bridging the gap between earlier infrared space missions and groundbased facilities. |
