| Description | The Milky Way and other galaxies require a significant source of ongoing star formation fuel to explain their star formation histories. A new ubiquitous population of discrete, cold clouds have recently been discovered at the disk-halo interface of our Galaxy that could potentially provide this source of fuel. We propose to observe a small sample of these disk-halo clouds with HIFI to determine if the level of [CII] emission detected suggests they represent the cooling of warm clouds at the interface between the star forming disk and halo. These cooling clouds are predicted by simulations of warm clouds moving into the disk-halo interface region. We target 5 clouds in this proposal for which we have high resolution HI maps and can observe the densest core of the cloud. The results of our observations will also be used to interpret the surprisingly high detections of [CII] for low HI column density clouds in the Galactic Plane by the GOT C+ Key Program by extending the clouds probed to high latitude environments. |

With a 3.5 m Cassegrain telescope it is the largest space telescope ever launched. It is performing photometry and spectroscopy in approximately the 55-671 µm range, bridging the gap between earlier infrared space missions and groundbased facilities. |
