| Description | We propose a pilot program to investigate the nature of thenon-standard extinction law of Type Ia supernovae through sub-mmobservations near the supernova lightcurve maximum. If scattering andabsorption by circumstellar dust contributes to the observedextinction, dust emission at sub-mm wavelengths is expected. Thus, weplan to target nearby reddened Type Ia supernovae around peakluminosity. A detection of sub-mm emission from the supernova locationwould dramatically improve our understanding of the processes behindthe dimming of supernovae, with far reaching implications for theiruse as distance indicators in cosmology. |

| Mission Description | Herschel was launched on 14 May 2009! It is the fourth cornerstone mission in the ESA science programme. With a 3.5 m Cassegrain telescope it is the largest space telescope ever launched.
