Description We propose a pilot program to investigate the nature of thenon-standard extinction law of Type Ia supernovae through sub-mmobservations near the supernova lightcurve maximum. If scattering andabsorption by circumstellar dust contributes to the observedextinction, dust emission at sub-mm wavelengths is expected. Thus, weplan to target nearby reddened Type Ia supernovae around peakluminosity. A detection of sub-mm emission from the supernova locationwould dramatically improve our understanding of the processes behindthe dimming of supernovae, with far reaching implications for theiruse as distance indicators in cosmology.

Mission Description Herschel was launched on 14 May 2009! It is the fourth cornerstone mission in the ESA science programme. With a 3.5 m Cassegrain telescope it is the largest space telescope ever launched. It is performing photometry and spectroscopy in approximately the 55-671 µm range, bridging the gap between earlier infrared space missions and groundbased facilities.
