  • Abstract: High-sensitivity photometry can provide unique information on the structure of edge-on dusty disks. When disc inhomogeneities pass in front of the star, they produce variations in the star extinction, dimming the stellar light. These variations are interpreted in terms of variable obscuration due to structures in the circumstellar disk suspected to be surrounding this star. Ground-based facilities are limited to large variations (a few 0.1 percent at the best), which happens on long-time scale of several days. Space-based photometry would allow us to scrutinize tiny variations due to inhomogeneities of small extension. Photometric precisions down to 0.01 percent enable us to probe density variations of a few percent or less; continuous observations of several hours allow us to detect inhomogeneities as large as the star (106 km or less).

Mission Description CHEOPS (Benz et al., https://doi.org/10.1007/s10686-020-09679-4) is a European Space Agency (ESA) mission in partnership with Switzerland with important contributions to the payload and the ground segment from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

The satellite has a single payload comprising an ultra-high precision photometer covering the 330 - 1100 nm wavelength range in a single photometric band. Observations are made as part of the Guaranteed Time Observing Programme that is formulated by the CHEOPS Science Team, and the Guest Observers Programme through which the Community at large can apply for CHEOPS time.
