  • Title of programme: ATMOS.CHAR - Ultra-Short Period Planets
  • Abstract: The aim is to search for variations in the transit depth (i.e. Rp/Rs) of Ultra-Short Period (USP) planets at different epochs, induced by the presence of dust in their atmosphere. We identified three transiting USP planets that could yield such variations : 55 Cnc e, HD 3167b and Corot-7b. Because of their short transit duration, we will observe them using visits made of three successive CHEOPS orbits (one before, one during, one after the transit, for a total of 5h). For each target we determined the number of visits that should be cumulated to get a reasonable precision on the variation of Rp/Rs between two epochs. Visits aimed at measuring Rp/Rs at a given epoch are grouped in a single Observation Request and should be performed as close as possible in time.

Mission Description CHEOPS (Benz et al., https://doi.org/10.1007/s10686-020-09679-4) is a European Space Agency (ESA) mission in partnership with Switzerland with important contributions to the payload and the ground segment from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

The satellite has a single payload comprising an ultra-high precision photometer covering the 330 - 1100 nm wavelength range in a single photometric band. Observations are made as part of the Guaranteed Time Observing Programme that is formulated by the CHEOPS Science Team, and the Guest Observers Programme through which the Community at large can apply for CHEOPS time.
